My Top 10 Baby Must Haves

March 18th, 2018

Hi, I’m Michaela! I’m a first-time mom to a feisty and constantly moving 1 year old.

When my daughter, Sage, was born, I swear we had a new Amazon or Target package on our doorstep every day. Nighttime feedings = buy more and anything that will help my child sleep and thrive but especially sleep.

While I tried out and returned many items that were not necessary or didn’t work for our daughter (it is all trial and error!), below are the things that I used and continue to use religiously.

01. Snuggle Me Organic

Buy this. Now. Just buy it. If I could buy every single mom (new or 3rd kid) one of these, I would. Sage basically lived in hers until she was about 6 months old and still loves it. As an infant, it was a saving grace for naps especially while traveling. I took ours to Alaska because it made life that much better. I would move it all around the house with her in it as I cleaned, did projects, and even at times napped next to her. While she doesn’t use it much now, she loves to sit in it and even take bottles while snuggled up in it.

02. Hatch Baby +

We love our noise machine. It was a lifesaver in the beginning as it has a built-in light. When Sage was born, I could keep a soft white light on (since I was waking up so much for feedings) and I never had to worry about it being too bright for her or my sleeping husband (though, I wanted to turn on the light to wake him up). It comes with so many choices for noise and has a 2-way audio monitor. For traveling, it was easy to pack up and reset for a different location. I am able to control everything from my phone and that in itself is a game-changer.

03. Wyze Camera

At first, I didn’t want a baby video monitor. I already had some anxiety and thought it would make it worse but when we moved Sage to her own room, I decided it would be nice to have one. It was the ultimate game-changer. This camera is affordable and so easy to use. I can control it from my phone and even check on her while I head to the store and she is at home with her daddy. The 2-way audio feature lets me talk to her without her physically going in and disturbing her naptime. For traveling, it is a simple unplug from the wall and link to the wifi. Always will recommend this!

04. Ryan and Rose Binkie

Each baby is different and some moms go through dozens of binkies to find the right one for their baby. These are some of our favorites. They are a little bigger which is great for Sage when she is looking for them at night in her crib. But the features I love the most are 1. they turn into teethers and 2. they come in different styles and thickness (for baby with teeth and without).

05. TakingCaraBabies Sleep Courses

Yes. Yes. Yes. These courses are the reason that our little chick sleeps like a champion. The newborn class changed our life and as she got older, we continued to follow the TakingCaraBabies plans. Sage can put herself to sleep, stays asleep, and doesn’t seek us for comfort when she wakes up in the middle of the night. Since she was 4 months old, our girl stopped waking up in the middle of the night and would wake up once at 5 am for a feeding. By 5 months, we were doing 8 pm to 7 am every day. Now we do 11-12 hours each night with full naps (currently 2 naps totaling 3-3.5 hours). These courses changed our lives.

06. The Ollie Swaddle

I swear Sage broke out of every swaddle we put her in and as a newborn would struggle with finding her calm. The Ollie Swaddle calmed her down and kept her asleep. It was an amazing investment. We used the swaddle until she was showing signs of starting to roll over. The Ollie worked as a perfect transition as well as we were able to swaddle her without her arms being tucked in.

07. ComoTomo Bottles

I pumped since week 1 with Sage and we were able to give her bottles when I needed to be away from her for periods of time. These bottles were amazing. We never had an issue with confusion as she breastfed and bottle-fed. At around 5 months, we switched her to formula and upgraded her to the bigger bottles. We loved the way that these worked and the shape and material of the bottle itself. *Note: we now use Dr. Brown’s bottles… not for any reason except that when she got older, she liked them better. These are the bottles I would 100% recommend for newborns.

08. Sage’s Fox, Loxy

After Sage’s 2 month shots, I felt a little sad for her and got this stuffed fox… little did I know that it would become the greatest possession to our little girl. I could have no sound machine, no binkie but if I had the fox, that girl would sleep. The company that I got Foxy Loxy from does other animals as well and they are the softest, most loveable snuggle toy for your little one.

09. Wildbird Sling

I used every carrier under the sun for Sage but nothing compares to the sling. It gave her the ability to look around (we have one very curious child) and it so easy to use. I even used it when I would clean and she was tired but didn’t want to be put down. One of my favorite purchases!

10. Tula Carrier

While Sage didn’t love carriers (sling girl!), she was not opposed to this one especially the backpack feature. The Tula is so versatile with a front carry and back carry option that not only is great for newborns but grows with your child! We found for short hikes and traveling when she was little, this was the way to go!
